Guernsey's Chief Minister leads delegation in Shanghai
Guernsey’s most senior politician, Chief Minister Lyndon Trott, has this week been spearheading Guernsey’s delegation to Shanghai.
The Chief Minister has had a full series of meetings over the last four days as he and the rest of the delegation team forge new and build on existing relationships with business leaders and government officials in the city.
“I would like to thank the Chief Minister for leading this delegation and particularly for investing so much of his time and energy into ensuring it was success,” said Peter Niven, Chief Executive of Guernsey Finance.
“His presence has ensured increased profile of Guernsey and particularly our expertise in providing financial services like trust and company administration.”
The Chief Minister led the delegation in meetings with the British Consulate in Shanghai; the City of London Shanghai Office; the Shanghai Venture Capital Association; the Chinese Banking Regulatory Commission; and the Vice-Mayor of Shanghai, Tu Guangshao.
The delegation has been specifically focusing on promoting how Chinese institutions and high net worth individuals can benefit from using trust and corporate services provided by Guernsey. Industry practitioners met with their counterparts throughout the week and also presented at a specific Guernsey seminar on fiduciary services, which was opened by the Chief Minister.
“We are delighted to renew our ties with the city’s politicians and business leaders in financial services here. We believe it is important to continue the dialogue and ensure that Guernsey becomes more of a recognised name in the community here in Shanghai,” the Chief Minister told guests.
“It is also an opportune time for us to be back showcasing our trust sector as we have just been named the leading international finance centre of the year by the prestigious Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).”
The Chief Minister was also invited to introduce the 2nd Shanghai International Forum of Venture Capital and Private Equity Investment which opens on Friday and runs through until the end of Saturday.
The Chief Minister joined the team for the Shanghai leg of what is a two centre delegation to the Far East. The previous week (5th-11th October) was spent in Hong Kong showcasing Guernsey through a specific trust and company seminar, a series of meetings with key decision makers and as lead sponsor and exhibitor at the STEP Asia conference in Hong Kong.
The delegation team included, as well as the Chief Minister and Mr Niven: Guernsey finance industry practitioners comprising representatives from Louvre Group, Collas Day, Butterfield, PwC, Nerine, Sarasin, Ince&Co, Augentius and RBC; Stephen Trevor, Director of Fiduciary and Intelligence Services at the Guernsey Financial Services Commission (GFSC); and Mark Whiteley, Guernsey Registrar of Companies.
